HUMANITIES

Information Technology and the Humanities Information and Communication Technology
(ICT) is to be considered both as means and as object of study within the humanities. Humanities research helps to strengthen the validity and innovative scope of the ICT field. Furthermore research in the humanities offers reflection on the transformation of our society as a result of the ever-expanding use of ICT. In addition to this the humanities themselves are being transformed by the use ICT. New ways of opening up resources, of doing research and of presenting knowledge are being explored across the different humanities disciplines. Proposals submitted under this theme should demonstrate substantial participation of humanities researchers and should be aimed at one or a combination of the three sub themes mentioned.

MEDICAL SCIENCES

Infectious diseases and Vaccines
An extra impulse in the field of Infectious diseases and vaccines is still important. Scientific and social challenges are for instance: research to determinants of the host, which are related to (a lack of) response at the vaccine. Further research in this area will stimulate the development of vaccines against autoimmune diseases and disorders such as (viral induced) cancer, arteriosclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases.

NANOSCIENCES

Nanophotonics
Nanophotonics is the research field that studies the manipulation, storage, generation, detection, and amplification of light at length scales that are typically smaller than the wavelength of light. The field combines a wealth of scientific challenges with a large variety of near-term applications. The largest concentration of research in The Netherlands is at the Centre for Nanophotonics at the FOM-institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) in Amsterdam. It provides advanced and for Russian researchers attractive facilities.

Nanofluidics
Nanofluidics deals with the flow of liquids and gases in very small capillaries and very thin channels. The challenging aspect mainly deals with the scaling of flows in such very small geometries, i.e. the square-cube law, where surface effects become dominant over volume effects. The extreme conditions in nanofluidics leads to new regimes of classical 'macroscopic' transport phenomena. Interactions that are insignificant at the macroscopic scale dominate the fluid behaviour at nanoscales. There is no doubt that in time industrial activity will stem from this research field.

Nanomedicine
Nanomedicine uses nano-sized tools for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disease and to gain increased understanding of the complex underlying pathophysiology of disease. The aim of nanomedicine may be broadly defined as the comprehensive monitoring, repair and improvement of all human biological systems, working from the molecular level using engineered devices and nanostructures to achieve medical benefit. In this context, nanoscale includes active components or objects ranging in size from 1 nm to 100s of nm. Also of relevance are nano-interactions within the framework of a larger device. The key elements of nanotechnology applied to nanomedicine are:
- The use of analytical tools and devices to bring a better understanding of the molecular basis of disease, patient predisposition and response to therapy, and to allow imaging at the molecular, cellular and patient levels.
-The design of nano-sized multifunctional therapeutics and drug delivery systems to yield more effective therapies.

Micro reactors
Recent developments in microreactor technology create opportunities for new and innovative production processes that are not only safer but it also offers more durable alternatives for current processes. For instance, smaller volumes, higher flow rates and the integration of diverse operation units brought the ‘lab-on-a-chip’ within commercial range. On a single chip potential interesting chemicals may be synthesized, analysed and screened on a nanolitre scale. Due to the large surface to volume ratio, interfacial interactions play a crucial role, which makes microreactor technology a complicated process and features including surface heterogeneity, surface roughness, surface potential, electrokinetics, and many more play important roles. Microreactor technology, therefore, is a highly interdisciplinary research area, where chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering merge together. Nevertheless, there is an increasing interest in doing chemistry-on-a-chip. One can think of screening reactions and/or reaction conditions, using minimal reagent amounts. In addition, if a complex chemical reaction can be successfully performed on a single chip, even industrial scaling up might become relatively easy by placing thousands of these chips in parallel.
